Funny times at the moment, funny times.

So the next video you're about to see Millie and I filmed a couple of weeks ago when we did the little ground lights video.

There's been a few other vlog type videos I wanted to get out in the meantime because I didn't want to put two master class type videos out one after the other.

But unfortunately over the last couple of weeks a lot of our work has been pushed so on the other side of April potentially May depending on, on how long this sort of Covid19 thing sticks around for.

I'm such a child. Hi guys welcome back to another master class.

Today another thing you guys have been asking for is how to install extractor fans.

Now, we tend to install what are called inline fans.

Now, these are the fans that are mounted in line in the loft space.

Right so let's have a look through the bits and pieces that we've got.

We've got a couple of internal grilles

Now these would be the ones that are sort of mounted in your bathroom and then a couple of external ones.

I'll be completely honest with you, I haven't seen these ones before or ever used them, I normally just use sort of the gravity ones or the fixed ones, so. But these are the ones the guys supplied so we'll have a look and give them a bit of a bit of a review.

And also while we're on the subject we've been sent some sort of ally ducting. We tend to use this for the insulated version or if it's only short runs we'll just use solid so thank you guys for sending that for the purpose of this video.

Right, so for the sake of this we're gonna pretend this end is the bathroom.

So, bathroom ceiling, and then this end is the external wall.

 [Laughter] ignore that

Right, let's have a quick peek at the fan.

We sort of decided to do this on this rig, one because I didn't want Milly jumping up in the lot and we both forgot to sell their sweating while we wired it all up, And two, who knows when we would have got to do it so getting this out and doing it it's a lot easier.

We'll not be able to test the full capabilities of the fan but you can certainly tell a lot from just, just getting it wired up so...

It helps if you can get out of the box!

Right, so as I mentioned before, this is an inline fan. This one, so with inline fans, typical, they come with a directional symbol assistance so you can get it wired up the right way.

So for this example we're going externally that way.

So let's just whip the top off of this and see what's in here.

So traditionally you supply this with a 3 core and earth cable so you'd have your live, neutral, earth -

(I'm not going from that line CPC or that yada-yada-yada - it's my channel)

and then you would have a switch live.

So, what have we got in here, no idea, in case of wrong connections the hardware breaks down, connection scheme is undercover... and something about Passport.

Ok, so what the hell do I connect into... Oh, into there  

So you've got your neutral, live and then LT, I assume is, is the timer. So when we come to do that we'll just rig up on a plug top.

Right so, the end I always start with is where you want the internal grill to go.

So I always try and mount these sort of fans directly above the shower because these days with pressurised systems and shower pumps and stuff like that the showers are absolutely, an astonishing amount, crazy so the steam they pump out is absolutely ridiculous!

So you want to try and get that as close to the shower as possible and being that there's no electrics in it you can literally just mount it straight above the shower.

So what I always do, find out where your joists are upstairs, measure it all out, stick a bradawl up, go up, find it, drill your four inch hole. That's where we've got to here.

So now I would put this in, get it all mounted, get it ready.

Do I? I'm not gonna bang a screw for it because I've only got like two inch tens so sticking out the other side.

So for this example we'll pretend that that is now screwed to the ceiling and complete.

So a lot of these fans tend to come with this little clip system these days, so, which is quite nice because you can, you can take out the middle section of the fan which is normally a heavy bit - that is monster! It's like a jet engine that is - so that's yeah quite impressive!

I will stick the blurb for this fan down here like the extraction rate and all that jazz.

So then you've got your base unit. so this one's nice and easy.

What we tend to do in loft spaces is we'll get a bit of board well probably only needs to be about that size just to span the joist, stick some rubber mat underneath it to stop the vibration.

So now I've got the base mounted.

There are four screws in here, not two, always four. But one of us has to take it apart when we're done. So you click the middle back in, grab these two bits - that's your fan all set up ready to go!

Now if we get, not going to worry too much about this end, I'll literally just poke it out, but this would be the opposite end to that, so on your external wall, your soffit, something like that drilling core hole, you'd have this there and then it would be exactly the same sort of thing ducted into outside.

Right so let's measure this off.

So I was always taught to keep this pretty tight when you use it because, you could imagine, if you've got a big, if that's all sort of like this you get a big collection of condensation in there and that is not good because it can build up it can go this way into the fan if you go that way you start leaking into the bathroom.

I've seen all sorts over the time and that's where the insulated version of this is great. So then what you do, I've made this difficult for myself because I haven't screwed that in!

We're good. So I always put a couple over just so you got a nice bit of coverage and then depending on access and things like that, I know sometimes these can be a complete pain in the ass if you're right down in the corner of a loft space like a pitch of a roof, sometimes you can't always get these clamps on. Ideally I think these are the best but like I'm not adverse to just cable tying it and then taping it and stuff like that.

So , a decent tape, not just your crappy run-of-the-mill electrical tape you know? Imagine trying to do this 50 degrees in a loft space? It's yeah good fun. So that is that end all nice and tight.

Then you'd pull this tight as you possibly can without pulling your other end off. nobody wants to (laughs) I wasn't gonna laugh at that - it's PG this is! We're a teaching channel now!

The other end of this on here. See what I mean, you imagine trying to do this, you're covered head to toe in insulation, you hate your boss, he's at home making YouTube videos, never in the loft space! I hate him! I hate him!

Why couldn't he have given me cable ties! So yeah nice and tight, flip that down. Can I do it with the Pozy one? Yes, yes we can! So again nice and tight and then what I do just, just wrap some tape around it because you have got sort of sharp ends.

Vented externally. See what I mean about, this is a thing when you make these fans off you have to be aware of this sag especially when using that so keep it nice and tight. Obviously this example is a foot either side.

So right, so I've just wired up in there, um, because we are doing it off a plug top I've just linked across live and the timer so it will just come on when I turn it on if it will reach the plug?

Well, let's do this, the old toilet paper test. it's a little bit unfair on this because um, but you sort of stand in people's bathrooms and just do that, just sort of throw it at the ceiling and if the fan grabbed it see it's only two foot spacing apart yeah.

So nice, sort of quiet, nice quiet fan. Like I say I'll stick the... actually it says here 245 meters cubed per hour so.

I'll maybe put some other extractor fans on, what their extraction rates are on the screen so you can see the difference but that's pretty much it. So the important things we're doing this, is always get a nice sturdy base for your fan. Like I say we use a rubber mat under the boards we probably the joists just to stop that vibration and because if we mount it that straight on the joist here. You can hear it a little bit when I hold onto it and then just keep your duct in nice and tight so no droopy bits like that.

Make sure you've, er, connected it properly so everything I haven't done in this video!

And oh, do you want me to take the camera?

So this is just the inside so you've got your cable entry here, your cable clamp which they provide and then your connections there, your neutral, live and your switched live and then what ever that is in the way.

So yeah how about you? Don't film that bit! I did that on purpose to show, show what can happen if you don't do that up right! You'll have to cut this next bit, I'm going to chase you around the house

Right so I'm gonna start taking this apart so I can use this extractor fan in our house.

That's it guys yeah just another yeah master class should we say of sorts. At least you've got a better idea of what we actually do when we're up in your loft for two hours because you can imagine trying to mark all this out, core drilling a gable end wall can take, I've had one take three hours before - I hit a brick tie and it just absolutely killed me. Before we go I forgot they also sent me a wall-mounted fan so instead of the grill at this end and the wiring here you'd have basically the extractor fan, this is a silent tornado ST100T, so again a timer version.

This would then mount on your ceiling or on your wall and then will duct straight outside from there.

So if it was on the ceiling and then it would come out through the loft space and out or straight out the wall.

This is actually a nice fan, fitted a couple of these before so... get it right way up!

So decent space for cable entry, they come with a proper grommet and everything there. I believe they’re IP45? Yes and all your connections are in there. As long as you don't and not a complete yob and you pull the rubber seal off. So yeah same sort of thing.

You get a little timer adjuster, this is all done on that side. So again another great product!
